Surgical Scissors: Separating Tip, Edge and Configuration in Your Enquiry

Record tip geometry and blade-edge details separately so your scissors enquiry identifies the configuration you need.

A scissors enquiry can specify a familiar pattern and the correct length while leaving the blade configuration unresolved. A sharp tip, a knife-style cutting edge and a serrated edge describe different features. Keep them in separate fields when comparing quotations so a short product name does not hide an important difference.

This guide helps purchasing teams describe those features in the SurgiPeak surgical scissors collection. It addresses catalogue interpretation and ordering records; it does not recommend scissors for a clinical task.

Separate the tip from the cutting edge

The tip description concerns the ends of the blades. The edge description concerns their cutting surfaces. A label such as blunt/blunt therefore does not, by itself, identify the edge construction. Likewise, a straight or curved description concerns geometry and should remain a separate question.

A useful manufacturer example is KLS Martin item 11-669-15-07. Its catalogue records blunt, curved tips and a serrated-edge/knife-edge combination in different fields. This illustrates why those fields should not be merged; it is not a specification for a SurgiPeak product or a statement that the products are interchangeable.

Ask what a SuperCut label means for the quoted item

Retain SuperCut when it appears in the required reference, then request the actual blade-edge details. For example, Sklar item 15-3442 identifies a razor-style edge paired with a micro-serrated edge. That is a description of that manufacturer's specific model, not a universal confirmation of every scissors bearing a similar label.

The SurgiPeak listings for Iris SuperCut Surgical Scissors 11.5 cm and SuperCut Spring Scissors 12.5 cm provide distinct starting references. Ask for the edge arrangement, tip configuration and handle construction of the exact item being quoted. Do not add an unlisted feature to your order record because another manufacturer's model includes it.

Keep material, inserts and finish separate

If your specification requires a particular material or a blade insert, write that requirement explicitly. Ask the supplier to confirm the construction rather than treating a handle colour or finish as proof. Record a requested coating separately from the instrument pattern and edge description.

This separation also makes a quotation easier to review. A missing answer can remain visibly unresolved instead of disappearing inside a broad term such as premium scissors. Material documents, where required, should refer to the supplied configuration.

Use photographs to resolve a named question

Send the product reference with a request for a close-up of the relevant blade or tip. State the feature you want confirmed. Fine edge details may be difficult to distinguish in a catalogue thumbnail, and a photograph alone does not establish a dimension or cutting-performance claim.

For straight and curved ordering references, compare the Mayo Surgical Scissors 14 cm (5.5 inches) and Curved Mayo Surgical Scissors 14 cm listings separately. Preserve the selected reference instead of using one photograph to represent both.

A compact configuration record

  • Full pattern name and product reference.
  • Overall length with its unit and agreed measurement definition.
  • Straight or curved configuration, with clarification where necessary.
  • Tip configuration for both blades.
  • Cutting-edge description for each blade, including any stated serration.
  • Required material, inserts, finish and handle style.
  • Quantity, packaging and any unanswered supplier questions.

Keep this record with the accepted quotation and any sample reference. If a feature changes, revise that line before confirming the order. See our instrument dimensions guide for measurement questions, or send SurgiPeak your scissors configuration enquiry. Availability and final supplied specifications are confirmed with the quotation.

Sources and date context

The linked KLS Martin and Sklar manufacturer catalogue entries were checked on 9 October 2026. They support the examples of separately recorded tip and cutting-edge fields. This is an original purchasing guide, not an announcement of a new product, standard or clinical development. The configuration record is SurgiPeak's procurement recommendation; manufacturer descriptions do not establish the specifications or certification of SurgiPeak instruments.
